Yachting with Ellure Yachts offers a world of comfort, flexibility, and exclusivity, but it also comes with its own vocabulary. Whether you’re booking your first charter or refining your understanding, here’s a glossary of essential private boating terms to help you navigate with confidence.

Onboard Areas & Spaces

Flybridge

The upper deck of a yacht, usually open-air, with lounge seating and often a bar or jacuzzi.

Main Deck

The primary level of the yacht, where you’ll usually find the main lounge, dining area, and access to outdoor seating.

Lower Deck

The level below the main deck, typically housing guest cabins and crew quarters.

State Room
A guest bedroom on the yacht. Often luxuriously appointed with ensuite bathrooms.
Salon
The main indoor lounge or living room area for relaxing and entertaining.
Galley
The yacht’s kitchen, where meals are prepared by the chef.
Bow
The front of the yacht, often with sun pads or lounging space.
Stern
The back of the yacht, often the main access point to the water.
Swim Platform
A deck at water level used for swimming, water sports, or boarding tenders.

Crew & Operations

Captain

The master of the yacht, responsible for safe navigation and your overall charter experience.

First Mate

The captain’s right-hand crew member, assisting with operations, safety, and guest services.

Chief Steward/Stewardess

Crew member overseeing guest service, hospitality, and onboard experience.

Deckhand
Crew responsible for maintaining the yacht’s exterior, helping with water toys, and guest support.
Charter Broker

Navigation & Safety

Bridge

The yacht’s command center, where navigation and piloting happen.

Helm

The steering position or wheel of the yacht.

Tender

A smaller boat carried by the yacht, used to go ashore or explore nearby areas.

Beam

The widest part of the yacht, giving you an idea of interior space.

Draft
How deep the yacht sits in the water; affects where it can travel (shallow bays, lagoons, etc.).
Knot
A unit of speed at sea; 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour (~1.15 mph).
Nautical Mile
A unit of distance used at sea (1 NM = ~1.15 land miles).
Mooring
The process of securing the yacht at a dock or anchorage.
Anchorage
A designated safe spot for dropping anchor, often in scenic bays.
